Global Talent visa in Digital Technology – 3rd in a series of articles

We continue our series of articles about Tech Nation endorsement.

This article is devoted to the third optional criterion related to significant technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions to the digital field as a founder, senior executive, board member or employee of a product-led digital technology company.

Optional Criterion 3 focuses on demonstrable impact. Applicants must show how their work made a measurable and meaningful difference to a product-led digital technology company or to the wider digital ecosystem. Unlike Optional Criterion 1, which emphasises innovation, this criterion does not require the contribution to be novel or groundbreaking. Instead, it must clearly demonstrate results, outcomes, and business or technical impact driven by the applicant personally.

Tech Nation will first distinguish whether you are applying as a technical applicant (where your role involves writing code or managing developers) or as a business applicant (where your role is non-technical but still central to the success of a digital product). In both cases, the evidence must focus on your individual contribution, not the achievements of a company or team as a whole.

For technical applicants, a “significant contribution”, examples given by Tech Nation are:

  • Having led in the development of high-impact digital products or services;
  • Starting or contributing to open source projects in a way that has been acknowledged by peers as advancing the field;
  • Having worked as a key engineer in the core product of a start-up, showing evidence as to how you have contributed to its success.

For business applicants, impact is usually demonstrated through leadership, growth, and execution within a product-led digital technology company. Typical examples include:

  • Having led or played a key role in the growth of a product-led digital technology company, such as influencing investment and strategy or delivering major products or releases;
  • Having founded a successful product-led digital technology company or other organisation and leading it.

Applicants should clearly differentiate evidence used for Optional Criterion 3 from evidence submitted under Optional Criterion 1. While innovation and impact can coexist, Tech Nation expects this criterion to focus explicitly on what changed as a result of your work.

The following types of evidence are particularly effective for demonstrating significant impact under Optional Criterion 3:

  • Letters from senior managers (such as CEOs, CTOs, Heads of Department) clearly describing your personal contribution and decision-making responsibility;
  • Product performance statistics showing measurable growth that occurred as a result of your involvement (e.g. revenue uplift, Monthly Active Users (MAU) growth, retention improvement);
  • Commercial agreements or partner confirmations that you directly negotiated or delivered;
  • Documents demonstrating quantitative results, such as P&L statements, KPI dashboards, revenue reports, or growth metrics.

Media mentions can also be valuable where they explicitly highlight your personal contribution, rather than only referencing the company or product in general.

Ultimately, Optional Criterion 3 is an opportunity to demonstrate that your skills and experience have translated into tangible value within the digital technology sector whether through code, leadership, or commercial execution.
